      Old Rockin' Chair's Got Me: An Evening of Folk & Jazz w/ Seth Hedquist, Hannah Marks & John Kizilarmut

      Seth Hedquist (guitar, vocals), Hannah Marks (bass), and John Kizilarmut (drums) come together from three different cities for one evening only of folk and jazz music. They will play compositions ranging from 19th-century hymns to 1940s jazz ballads, and feature original material. Come hear these three full-time musicians in a rare performance together. Seth Hedquist teaches guitar to students of all ages at the Central IowaMusic Lab in Des Moines. He has recorded with Bonne Finken (Fairytales/Love Affairs, 2014), The Maytags (Meriweather, 2019), and many others. He also performs with the Des Moines Symphony and has accompanied Tony Award-winning Broadway musicians such as Audra McDonald, Sutton Foster, Kristin Chenoweth, Brian Stokes Mitchell, andMegan Hilty. Additionally, he has been a multi-instrumentalist in Des Moines for touring Broadway productions like Beautiful: A Carol King Musical, Something Rotten!, and Chicago, and Mean Girls. Seth holds a master’s degree in history from Iowa State University, and is the author of “Boost theFarm Bureau: Agricultural Leaders, Progressive Musicians, and Social Orchestration in Iowa, 1921—1937,” (Agricultural History, Volume 93, Number 2, Spring 2019), a peer-reviewed article about the relationship between local musicians and agricultural leaders in the 1920s and 30s. Above all, he loves spending time with his wife, Kathryn. Hannah Marks is a bassist, bandleader, and composer living in New YorkCity. Hannah’s main project is her own band, Heartland Trio. She also plays as a sideman for several singer-songwriters, including The Voice runner-up Addison Agen and Grace Minnick. She has played with Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith III, Ingrid Jensen, Ben Wendel, Sullivan Fortner, Tierney Sutton, Delfeayo Marsalis, John Raymond, and Ann Hampton Callaway. Marks is a 2019 alumnus of Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, a 2018alumnus of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, and a 2014 alumnus of the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony.Hannah is an alumnus of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Walter Smith, Todd Coolman, and Kurt Muroki. She was a member of IU’s top jazz group, the Plummer Jazz Quintet, led by Walter Smith. She hails from Des Moines, IA, where she got her start playing in monthly Des Moines Community Jazz Center jam sessions and attending Synergy Jazz Foundation Workshops. By the time she graduated high school, she played regularly with the Max Wellman Quartet, thePlymouth Church Saturday Night Band, and the Dave Bohl Quartet. Recent studio work includes a Heartland Trio’s debut album Year One; Alone Together, a jazz vocal/bass duo EP with vocalist Kathryn Sherman, and Mostly Home, a full-length album with singer songwriter Grace Minnick. John Kizilarmut has performed with a wide range of artists and groupsincluding Aretha Franklin, Doc Severinsen, Matt Wilson, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Logan Richardson, Clark Terry, New York Voices, Ana Gasteyer, Conspirare, Shirley Jones, DJ Starscream, and the Des Moines Symphony. He is a frequent guest performer and clinician at percussion and jazz festivals throughout the midwest, including Texas, Iowa, and Nebraska Days of Percussion; Tallcorn, Kansas City, Cherokee, Hannover, and Iowa City Jazz Festivals. In 2013, John was a featured artist along with with TOCA artist Jamal Mohamed and Marimba One artist Matthew Coley at the PASIC convention. He is also an active composer and arranger, and his works have been featured by many award winning music programs including the 2013 State Jazz champion Waukee High School Jazz Ensemble, Lake Central High School Band, several DCI Drum Corps, and the University of Texas percussion ensemble. As an educator, Johndirected the 2017 Iowa All-State Jazz Ensemble, and has served on the faculties of Drake University, Grinnell College, and Northwest Missouri State University.
