Western Perspectives Film Series: Monument Valley

This series highlights three films that offer different takes on the Western, chosen by the exhibition curator, an historian, and an artist. These films will help us examine questions of history, race, and American identity in the Western genre. Each film will be introduced by the artist or scholar who chose it, who will then lead a post-film audience discussion.

      The Searchers, 1956
      John Ford, director
      1 hour 56 minutes / Rated PG
Selection by: Paul Albert Lacson, Associate Professor of History, Grinnell College

The Searchers is widely considered the aesthetic highpoint of the classic Western film, and has influenced generations of filmmakers. The film’s approach to race and gender, however, typifies how Westerns can be difficult to reconcile for many contemporary audiences.
